Canadian Visual Charts are similar to U.S. format, and a joy to use. With less cultural and airspace clutter they show more VFR aviation information, e.g. LF/MF airways based on NDB navigation and recommended mountain routes (by "sausage links"). Unlike US charts, Canadian visual charts show no expiration date. In the more populated areas (within 200nm north of ConUS border) the Canadian visual charts are revised almost every year. Northward in more remote areas there is less change, less air traffic and less demand for charts. For these sparesely settled regions charts are revised less frequently. Current status of all visual charts is indicated below.

Canadian Topos are available as follows:
Eastern Area - Ontario, Quebec & Maritimes (NB, PE, NS & NF) 1:250,000, 100% coverage in color; 1:50,000, approx 50% in color, 40% in black/white, + 8% photomap (several islands in northern Hudson Bay & Hudson Strait unmapped at 1:50,000); plus 1:25,000 color topos of many well-populated (for us country boys that's an oxymoron) areas.
Western Area - British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba & Yukon Territory from the border to 68 N; at 1:250,000, 100% coverage in color; 1:50,000, approx 40% in color, 55% in black/white, and 5% photomap.
Northern Area comprising essentially the Northwest Territory and northernmost Yukon Territory is completely mapped at 1:250,00 in color; at 1:50,000 less than 20% in color, approx 35% in black/white, and less than 10% in photomap - with 50% unmapped at this scale.

Topos are mentioned because many helicopter and bush pilots ask for them (to say nothing of fisherman & hunters). APS doesn't stock but a very few. If you need them, give us the co-ordinates (lat/long) and we'll get them. ("Service" is our last name).

* The several Canadian Planning Charts were withdrawn from circulation some 10 years ago when Canada Map Office was "downsized" severely.

DOD Global Navigation and Planning Charts are the only aviation planning charts available for Canada. The GNC's show terrain by shading and peak elevations, rivers, lakes, cities, railroads, major highways, state or province boundaries, airports (Rwy pattern if over 4000ft), and navaids. They provide an excellent basis for route planning and distances, but lack the terrain details to adequately assess route options through high mountains and often do not show all "over 4,000ft Rwy" airports when larger airports 'crowd' the area. GNC 2 covers almost all flying one is liable to do in or thru Canada and enables you to plot a route from anywhere in the "lower 48" states to Alaska via the coastal or AlCan Highway routes; or to the "jumping off" airports in eastern Canada for a North-Atlantic crossing through Greenland and/or via Iceland, direct, or via the Azores routes.
Canada Flight Supplement is the most excellent and comprehensive airport directory and in-country planning book in the world. The 74-page General section includes a wealth of information both general in nature, pertinent to Canada, and regarding data in the A/FD section. The 821-page Aerodrome/Facility Directory section for Canadian airports contains airport and obstacle clearance diagrams as well as thorough airport information. Additional diagrams are included for VFR Terminal Procedures where required by congestion, noise, or terrain (at night). Text includes airport data as in US Airport/Facility Directories plus name & phone #(s) of airport operator; phone #(s) for services, customs, and additional airport managers and/or noise or special offices; whether the airport is certified or registered (not inspected as frequently - pilots should obtain current info from the operator); facilities avbl (phone, food, taxi, medical, RON accomodation, car rental) & proximity to airport; 2ndary FSS, depth of WX briefing svcs avbl; grades of oil; service hrs (avbl), types of (A&P) servicing and parking/hangar avbl, FBO advisory freqs & oper hrs; more detailed description of Arresting Gear and airport lighting; Mandatory Freqs with hrs and airspace, bilinqual (also French) comm avbl, DRCO (dial-up RCO), ATF freq(s) and hrs; PAR type, hrs, minimums. A 5-page Aerodrome/Facility Directory lists 5 Greenland airports, and Keflavik (Iceland) and Lajes (Azores) airports. Coverage is similar to Canada airports, but without airport or obstacle clearance diagrams. A 129-page Planning section describes general requirements, airspace, and procedures; VFR chart updating data (by province) and hazards; flight restrictions; Preferred Routes, North American Routes (NAR) for North Atlantic Traffic, Airway Intersection & Reporting Point co-ords; Final Approach Course Fixes co-ords; VFR chart dealers. A 40-page Radio Navigation & Communications section defines VOR coverage & restrictions; lists all navaids by name, and ident (with freq & co-ords); Commercial Broadcast Stations (low freq); mountain valley comm svc - RCOs in BC & AB; North Atlantic VolMet (MF weather), ARINC freqs; 16-page Military Flight Data & Procedures; North Atlantic and Alaska A/G Comm freqs (VHF & HF); 14-page Emergency Procedures.
Canada Water Aerodrome Supplement is similar in layout and thoroughness to the Canada Flight Supplement and is issued in late March. Additional data for Open Water season and whether frozen water surface is used for skiplanes in winter. The A/FD section comprises 228 pages covering over 400 water landing areas. The back cover is the front cover for the bilingual/French section for about 80 water landing areas in Quebec province. (These water aerodromes are also in the english section).

41 Canada, 2 Greenland & 7 N Atlantic Airports IFR approaches
Enroute charts show civil and military airports with an approved Instrument Approach Procedure; and also many airports without any Instrument Approach Procedures. Enroute charts do not show terrain or cultural landmarks (roads, cities, etc). Only large bodies of water are depicted, Chart format, symbols and coloring are similar to FAA (formerly NOS) Enroute Charts.
Low Altitude Enroute charts are for use up to, but not including 18,000ft MSL. In addition to controlled and uncontrolled airspace; controlled airspace above 12,500MSL is also depicted. The LO-9/10 includes North Atlantic airways within Greenland and northernmost Canada / and from Canada past or across Greenland to Iceland and on to the Scottish or Stavanger FIRs; and Canada to the Azores and the Madieras and/or Lisboa FIR. Weather broadcast (VHF & HF) freqs and HF and extended range VHF comm freqs, respectively.
High Altitude Enroute charts are used at/above 18,000ft MSL in southern Canada, but Northern Control Area is FL 230 & above, and Arctic Control Area is FL280 & above. Arctic and northern routes from western Canada or US to Europe and from Eastern Canada or US to Asia criss-cross each other. Chart format, symbols and coloring are similar to U.S./FAA (formerly NOS) enroute charts.
Canada Air Pilot are Terminal Procedures Pubs. Approach format is similar to FAA (nee NOS) TPPs. Charts are spiral bound in the familiar 5.5x8.5 inch size and are in seven books/volumes. CAP 1 for Yukon, NT, and Nunavut Territory covering northern and arctic Canada; CAP 2 for British Columbia; CAP 3 for Prairie Provinces - Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba; CAP 4 for Ontario; CAP 5 for Province of Quebec; CAP 6 is also for PQ in French; and CAP 7 for Atlantic Provinces - Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland/Labrador.
DOD Canada & North Atlantic FLIP (instrument approach) coverage continues to grow slowly. Canadian coverage is far from complete, but adequate for entry from the U.S. or N Atlantic and Greenland. Greenland coverage is sorely lacking, limited to Sondrestrom and Thule (the latter being a USAF facility near the northern end of Greenland). Iceland, Azores and Bermuda are adequately covered. The long time between revisions is punctuated by two TCNs (appended revisions) at 56 and 112 days into the cycle.

The Canadian IFR charts and Canada Flight Supplement revise every 56 days (same dates as US IFR charts). For revision dates click here
