Note - None of the Planning Charts above show the topography (terrain) essential for Situational Awareness in IFR flight. Although this information is on Sectional and WAC charts (whose smaller scales give more adequate awareness of terminal & airport environment), larger scale DOD charts are favored for planning. These are availble in 1:2million, 1:3mil, and 1:5mil scale as JNC, JNCA, and GNC charts, respectively.
[goto home page, then to DOD]
* Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands A/FD data are included in Southeast Airport/Facility Directory.
** Small airport diagrams (similar to those in Supp. Alaska) are being added to A/FDs beginning in 2000. Large, full-page airport diagrams are
being added to A/FDs for selected Part 139 (scheduled air carrier) airports beginning July 12, 2001 (to avoid Runway Incursions).

Enroute charts show civil and military airports with an approved Instrument Approach Procedure; and also many non-IFR airports. Enroute. Charts do not show terrain or cultural landmarks (roads, cities, etc). Only large bodies of water are depicted, Low Altitude Enroute charts are for use up to, but not including 18,000ft MSL. High Altitude Enroute charts are used at/above 18,000ft MSL. IFR flights in US airspace over the Caribbean or Pacific use DOD or Jeppesen Low, High or combined Low/High Altitude Enroute charts.
*
TPPs continue to grow in number as the more-easily constructed GPS approaches are added.(was 20 books in 1999; going to 24 vols 11/1/01. Civil US Caribbean airports with Standard Instrument Apprach Procedures are included in Volume SE-3 of ConUS TPP Set. With the exception of Alaska and Pacific areas the FAA TPPs do not include military airports - these are in separate DOD books called "FLIPs". The ConUS TPP books are available either bound or loose-leaf. Loose-leaf plastic rings ($2/unit) or binders or ringed boards (both $9.95) are available.
